Moving beyond the object.

This body of art is transcending beyond mirroring the nature. It moves toward the alternative realities that are generated by Michael’s minds-eye. He is using unconventional means of application such as ink brayers, squeegees, and scrapers to achieve the unexpected results. It is a virtuous process of deconstructing and reconstructing. While drawing, Mentler is aware of the model, but he is not relying on what he sees. Instead, he counts on his a priori knowledge of the human figure. Past experiences are ingrained into Michael’s subconscious. The model or the object inspire the mind, and in turn the reason provides the information. The model is very incidental to Michael’s process which revolves around rational decision-making. This creative process is the key to Michael Mentler’s unique art and this series in particular.
